Bob Harris, Chief Technology Officer, Channel 4 Television. Bob joined Channel 4 in 1999 and today oversees technology across the Channel, a remit which includes IT and broadcast infrastructure, internal line‑of‑business systems, and web facing and mobile platforms.
A major focus during his time at the Channel has been the continuous evolution of the Channel’s web-facing platforms which, since 2005, have grown to encompass the services which underpin the Channel’s VoD (Video on Demand) offering 4oD, which launched in December 2006.
More recently, Bob has driven the adoption of Cloud Computing, and C4 has been running “live” web-facing” applications on the Amazon AWS cloud since late 2008. Established as the default platform of choice for many of the Channel’s websites, he is now looking to leverage the benefits of Cloud Computing across other activities and business areas. Today, a major focus is the evolution of C4’s Big Data strategy which is based on open‑source, and cloud‑based, technologies.
Prior to joining Channel 4, Bob held the position of Chief Technology Officer with Marks & Spencer, and prior to that gained extensive experience in the life assurance industry.
